Mentiloth
Mentiloth — sometimes mentamoth, which is likely a better description — are the death-winged steeds of The Xin, used for high speed transport and dexterity during battle. These creatures are notoriously unstable and possess a poisonous bite, making them and their masters a fearsome combination. The size of a onetoe and the shape of a moth, they strike fear into many species without ever taking to the skies.
The Mentiloths are henchmen of the Xin, which sells them considerably short. The Xin give them orders. The Mentiloths built the infrastructure those orders travel through. The silk networks that the Nascenti's coral later fused with — the foundation of the dark net — were woven by the Mentiloths before the Xin were managing anything. Whether the Mentiloths chose this arrangement or arrived at it through a series of decisions that made sense at the time is not information they have volunteered.
They move through thick ether with a directional flicker that makes them very difficult to track — there, not-there, there again, two feet to the left of where you were looking. The bite delivers an acid compound that works on both organic tissue and dark matter simultaneously. Individually, they are not a significant threat. They do not travel individually.
Field note: they are drawn to active thought — strong intention, strong emotion, strong concentration. If you need to move through an area with Mentiloths, clear your mind. Think about something boring. This is harder than it sounds.
