Dyapnid
Dyapnids are large black beetles, the length of a wooltard, but with short squat limbs, which gives them a scurrying appearance. They move extremely fast and, being denizens of a third kind — neither denizens of the hex nor biological or genetic adaptations, but developed by evolution in the wild — they have access to the hive mind and intelligence. Domesticated by The Xin as hunting animals, much like humans domesticated ripperthroats as barkers, some serve masters, others maraud The Dark Peak in sizeable and intimidating packs.
The wild ones move with unhinged speed. The mandibles are the primary concern: broad, articulated, and capable of reducing dense bone to fragments in under a minute. The shell is chitinous and unremarkable. You will hear them before you see them — a rapid chittering that your brain will take two seconds too long to identify as a threat.
They are not intelligent. This is, paradoxically, the problem. There is no negotiating with something that has no concept of negotiation. The hive response is triggered by movement and smell. Standing still reduces your risk. Running confirms your status as prey.
Field note: they do not eat you whole. They strip what they want and move on. If you are found by one Dyapnid, assume three more are already behind you.
