Blub
A blub, or blubberfin, comes in at least two varieties anyone's confirmed -- river-going and ocean-going -- and both are built along lines that would be familiar to anyone who's seen an off-world whale from a boat. What isn't familiar is what's apparently going on behind the eye.
They're credited, by everyone from the The Xin to the milting, with an intelligence that outstrips most of the denizens of the hex, and I have no way to independently verify that beyond the one time I sat on the bank of a flooded quarry near Damflask and watched a river blub hold my gaze for the better part of two minutes without blinking, doing absolutely nothing else, as if it were deciding something about me and taking its time over the decision.
They hunt, when they hunt, with a patience that borders on strategy rather than instinct -- driving a shoal of rainbowslid toward a shallow it's chosen days in advance, by all accounts, rather than simply chasing what's in front of it. A blub that's decided you're prey rather than furniture will not be outrun and will not be reasoned with by anything short of leaving its water entirely.
The ocean-going variety is said to be considerably larger and I have never seen one myself. The milting, when I asked, changed the subject in the specific way that means they know exactly what I'm asking about.
Field note: if a blub holds still and watches you rather than diving, it has already noticed you. Move away from the water's edge, slowly, and stop making eye contact.
