Brock Stump

Brock Stump is the first thing you meet at the Hole. This is intentional. Ming Shalom placed him here because Brock is, in the way that matters most at a tunnel entrance below a river, exactly what the Hole requires: a jellyhead of thirty-eight years' underground service whose professional relationship with entry protocols has been refined to the point where the protocols are less a set of rules he follows and more a register he lives in. He does not make exceptions. He does not make conversation. He processes.

He has been in the underground murk long enough that the older murk in the tunnels has developed a protective quality toward him. Not a deliberate defence - the murk does not make decisions about individuals, it does not distinguish loyalty from proximity - but the accumulated years of close contact have created something. A density around him. A slight resistance in his vicinity that is not his and not entirely environmental. In practice this means that any attempt to read Brock psychically is harder than reading Brock's mind should be. His mind is straightforward. The murk around it is not. I tried once to read the murk directly, treating its density as an archive of what it had absorbed from him. What came back was not Brock. It was a compressed catalogue of every refusal the Hole has processed in fifteen years - and it had no edge I could find. The murk does not summarise. What I was reading was everything that had been turned away, all at once, without sequence.

His thoughts, when I had occasion to observe them secondhand, are organised around the requirements of his work: tunnel geometry, entry protocols, threat categories, the location of things on his person. There is no excess. What he considers at the end of a shift, what he does outside the tunnels, whether he has a life that is not this - I cannot tell you. Ashe Wyre is who you should be thinking about. Brock is who you meet first.

Field note: he will pass you or he will not. Either way, Wyre will know within minutes. Prepare for that, not for Brock.
