Buzzer
"Buzzer" covers whatever's making the noise near your ear that you can't identify before it's gone -- fly, bee, something with wings that never quite resolves into a shape you'd recognise from an off-world field guide. It is the smallest, laziest word in Hellsborough's vocabulary, and it does an enormous amount of work.
Most buzzers are exactly as harmless as the word suggests. A handful aren't, and the trouble is you cannot tell which from the sound alone. The pitch that means "ordinary fly, ignore it" and the pitch that means "something's about to land and it isn't leaving without a piece of you" sit close enough together that I have been caught out twice, and I read the murk for a living.
What tips you off, when you notice it in time, is the pause. A harmless buzzer's drone is continuous. A dangerous one stops for half a second right before it lands, as if it's checking the angle, and that half-second of silence is worth more than any amount of squinting at the shape in your peripheral vision.
I've stopped trying to identify buzzers on sight. I listen for the gap instead.
Field note: if a buzzer's drone cuts out mid-air near your face, swat first and check what it was after.
