Flatface
An owl, also known locally as a hooter, which is the sort of plain, functional Hellsborough name I have a soft spot for. Flatfaces are the biggest of Hellsborough's owls by a distance, the disc of the face wide enough to work like a satellite dish, and they hold territory the way little else in the Wisewood bothers to.
A flatface's patch is marked by the hoot rather than any scent-line or dung-cairn -- a low, carrying call repeated on a rota through the murkneet, and any owl trespassing on a held patch gets a warning call first, a real attack second. I have heard two flatfaces argue a boundary for the better part of an hour without either landing a strike, purely on the strength of who could out-hoot the other.
Against a person the danger is the strike itself, silent until the moment of impact -- flatface feathers have a fringe structure that kills the air-noise a normal wingbeat makes, so the first indication you get is the talons already closing. They target the head and shoulders, going for anything pale or moving against a dark background, which under a psycmask's readout lights makes anyone wearing one a walking target after dark.
They eat rooter, scrufftail, the odd unlucky flufftail, and will take a clucker straight off its perch if the run isn't covered.
Field note: cover a psycmask's readout lights before walking after dark in flatface territory, or better, don't walk it at all until murkrise.
