Peewhit

Peewhit — Bestiary of The Dark Peak

Lapwings, green plovers, and the name comes straight from the call -- a rising, wheeling pee-whit that off-world birdwatchers find rather charming from a respectful distance. Keep that distance in Hellsborough. A peewhit's charm wears off fast once you understand what the call is actually for.

They nest on open ground in scrapes barely deeper than a boot-print, and a peewhit defending a nest doesn't retreat to a safe height and screech the way an off-world lapwing does. It comes down. Full stoop, wings folded, pulling out at the last possible moment to rake with the wing-spur rather than the beak -- a spur most field guides don't mention because most field guides are describing a different bird.

What makes them properly dangerous is that a peewhit doesn't stop once you're off its nest. It has decided you're a threat to the eggs, and it keeps deciding that for a lot longer than the actual threat lasts, following a retreating walker for a quarter mile of repeated stoops before it finally lets the grudge go.

They hunt worms and grubs between attacks with the same single-minded appetite they bring to defending the nest, which I suspect is the same drive doing two different jobs.

Field note: if a peewhit starts its display call overhead, you're near a nest. Keep walking in a straight line away from it. Stopping only extends the argument.
