Venomtooth
The venomtooth is what the few guidebooks that exist call an adder, and it's accurate as far as it goes: zigzag markings, a diamond head, a bite that will drop you if you're small or unlucky. What the guidebooks leave out is that an ordinary adder waits. A venomtooth hunts.
It tracks by heat, and does it well, following a trail across open moorland with a directness no cold-blooded animal should be capable of, and it does not stop when you change direction. I've watched one correct its line twice in under a minute, adjusting to a walker who had no idea she was being followed at all.
The strike is fast and low, almost always the ankle, and the venom works on a clock rather than a dose. Once it's in, more distance covered means more venom pumped, so the instinct to run is exactly the wrong one. Sit down. Stay still. Let the grizzlers and the flufftails do the moving.
Colouring varies more than an ordinary adder's, from the expected khaki-and-black through to a rust that only shows in direct light, and I suspect the variation tracks which stretch of moorland a given venomtooth has spent its life hunting -- camouflage tuned to the peat, the bracken, the gritstone, whichever it's had longest to learn.
Field note: if you're struck, do not run. Sit, stay calm, and get someone else to fetch help. Running spreads the venom faster than walking ever could.
