Coumes Rift Worm
A giant venomtooth, or so the story goes, coiled somewhere in the Coumes Wood near Onesmoor, big enough that a full-grown venomtooth would pass for one of its young. I have been looking for three years. I have found sloughed skin, twice, each shed roughly the width of a dustbin lid. I have not found the worm.
What convinces me it's real, rather than a story the Coumes Wood locals tell to keep strangers out of their mushroom patches, is the pattern of the wood itself. There's a track through the undergrowth, wide as a felled tree, that appears in a different place every few years and always heals over from the edges inward, the way a wound does rather than the way a path does.
Nobody I've spoken to claims to have seen the whole animal and lived to describe it properly. What comes back, consistently, is the head -- venomtooth-shaped, scaled the same, but the size of a car bonnet, with eyes that track a person's movement from a distance no ordinary snake's vision should manage.
If it hunts the way its smaller cousin does, heat first, correcting direction on the move, then anyone it's decided to track has very little chance of losing it in that wood. I choose to believe it mostly isn't hungry.
Field note: if you find a sloughed skin the width of a dustbin lid in the Coumes Wood, leave the wood the way you came in, not the shorter route.
