Grizzler

The grizzler is what a badger becomes when it is left to patrol a boundary for a few hundred years. I have watched them working the old sett-lines along the Wisewood margin, low grey-and-black shapes moving nose-down through the bracken, following a border only they can see. They are not large -- knee height at the shoulder -- and if you did not know what you were looking at you would take one for an ordinary brock gone a little wrong in the murk.

It does not roam. It patrols. Each grizzler holds a line -- a hedge, a wall, a stream, the lip of a lane -- and walks it end to end, murkneet after murkneet, widening the ditch, re-digging the boundary, pressing its scent into every stone. Where the line has no marker it makes one, throwing up earthworks and half-tunnels that I have watched appear across a field in a single week. The nascenti tolerate them because a grizzler's border-digging feeds the organic network better than any surveyor could; every ditch it cuts is another nerve laid into the ground.

The danger is simple and it is the jaw. A grizzler will let you cross its line once. It watches. The second time, it takes the leg below the knee and it does not release -- badger jaws are hinged so the lower mandible cannot be pulled free, and the grizzler's are worse. It will drag you off the path and into the mouth of its sett, and the sett goes down further than it has any business going. The ones who go down do not come back up. The digging is not for you. You are simply cleared from the boundary.

I cannot tell you what a grizzler eats, or whether it eats at all. The teeth are for holding, not chewing. Its claws are the length of my fingers and worn flat at the tips from stone. In murklight -- what passes for it here -- they wall themselves into the setts and cannot be dug out; I have known humans in the nether lands -- the nethermen lose a spade and two fingers trying. The stripe down the face is not white but a pale, faintly luminous grey, and it is the last thing a good many trespassers have reported seeing before the bracken closed over them.

Field note: learn the lines before you walk them. A grizzler's territory is marked by a fresh ditch and a smell like wet iron. Cross it once if you must. Never cross it twice by the same gap.
