Ask anyone in Hellsborough and they'll grade the murk in five stages: clear, thin, risen, thick and, very occasionally, an event. Locals learn the names long before any science, and only the last one really matters, because an event is when it stops behaving like weather and you stop being the one deciding where you go. It is alive, by every account the DPDC will admit to on the record, and it can want, which newcomers take longest to accept and locals no time at all. On the quieter stretches you can hear it, a thin tinny sound like a funfair packing up two valleys over that never gets any closer. Enough jellyheads claim to know the tune that the DPDC has more than once tried to ban humming it in public.
