Mnemvore

I have never seen Mnemvore, and neither has anyone else, because there is nothing there to see. What stands at the centre of the Nine Ladies is an amber light with no lamp beneath it and no body inside it, and nine faces that were never its own, turning in it at once. I have read the residue Veth lifted off the stones: nine stolen Soulprints, one to a stone, and beneath all nine the same signature, which belongs to none of them. It reads like nine deaths laid over one appetite older than any of them. That signature is the thing itself: a Soulprint that learned to feed on Soulprints, and the first of its kind the murk ever grew.

It does not hunt. A murk wraith comes for you; a Morivarid shoal is on you before you hear it. Mnemvore waits, and reads. It goes through a mind the way you would go through a dead man's pockets, keeps whatever it fancies, and hangs the keeping on a stone where it can read it again at leisure. The nine it wears now are the ones still worth wearing. The cairns heaped around the circle, hundreds of them, are the ones it wore out and let go to murk once it had what it wanted. I counted them for as long as my nerve lasted, and then I stopped.

The danger is not that it kills you. It is that it reads you and keeps the part it liked. Stand too long inside the ring and it turns off its nine and onto you. Then it works two seams at once: it wears at your murk-sense and unpicks your memory together, and it gets better at both the longer you stay. Lose the first and it keeps you on a bond you will never feel slacken. Lose the second and you forget your own name, your outline goes soft, and you set into the tenth stone. You do not win this. You leave, and leaving costs more with every breath you spend deciding to.

Underneath, it is the murk's first go at wanting. Everything else the murk makes is appetite with nobody home behind it: the wraith, the shoal, the scratcher ring that stands sentinel around Mnemvore's circle. Mnemvore is the first thing it grew that wanted to keep being itself, and having no self to keep, it keeps everyone else's. The DPDC red-flagged the Nine Ladies a decade back and walled off the survey, which is their way of not writing a thing down. It is not the only circle on the high moor. I do not know how many soulscrapers stand in stone up there now. I know this one taught the rest.

Field note: it cannot read the King Stone, and it cannot read a mind that gives it no rhythm to catch. Go quiet, go still, take what you came for, and be back over the stones before it looks up. If it looks up, you have already stayed too long.
