Soulscraper
A Soulscraper is what the murk makes when it wants to keep something and has nothing of its own to keep it in. It has no Soulprint, no body, no name until someone gives it one. What it has is an appetite and a talent: it reads a mind, keeps the parts it likes, and hangs each keeping on a standing stone where it can read it again whenever it pleases. I have stood at the edge of one's circle. I did not go in.
They den at old stone: circles, boundary markers, the propped grit of workings nobody has surveyed in a generation. You know one is working before you see it, because the residue off the stones reads as people who are not there. A signature that belongs to no living Soulprint on the DPDC's books, repeated, one to a stone. Most soulscrapers hold a handful. Mnemvore, the first and oldest of them, wears nine, and taught the rest how.
The danger is the same at every one of them. Stand too long in reach and it stops attending to what it already holds and starts reading you. It works two seams at once: it wears at your murk-sense and it unpicks your memory, and it gets better at both the longer you stay. Let the first go and it keeps you on a bond you will not feel tighten. Let the second go and you forget your own name and set into the next stone. You do not fight a soulscraper. You take what you came for and you are gone before it looks up.
You cannot kill one; there is nothing there to kill. You can only take back what it holds, pull an echo loose and let it go to murk the way it should have years ago, and each one you free is one less mouth in its wall. It will make another within the murkneet. There are more circles on the high moor than anyone has counted, and the residue says not all of them are empty.
Field note: a soulscraper cannot read what gives it no rhythm to catch. Go quiet, go still, keep your business short. If you feel it turn toward you, you have already stayed too long.
