Nothing in the culverts under Neepsend answers you until you give it a reason to. The Ullagnaw keeps to the resonant places -- the tiled outflow below the Rivelin dams, the long drains where a dropped coin rings a full second before it dies -- and it stays only dark until you cough, or scrape a boot on wet brick, and wake it. What it drains is not your body but the murk carried in you -- the soul-weight The Nascenti read and the hive-mind files -- and it takes it at its own pace: no pain, only the sensation of being slowly tuned down. Going quiet after it has fixed on you buys minutes, not escape; silence slows the erosion, it never halts it. There is no corpse to recover, just a cooling batch of murk-salt that rings faintly when you cup it, as though the sound it took were still inside, looking for the way out. Do not sing in the culverts: carry iron, keep moving toward open ground, and accept that you will leave lighter than you came.

That's when I should have noticed the distinction. There's a difference between a silence that doesn't transmit and a silence that takes.

View full editionA curlbeak call — falling three notes, hollow, spaced slightly too far apart — is not a hunting signal. It is a territorial marker. First call: you are in range. Second call from a different direction: it has repositioned around you. No third call means optimal distance has been reached, and you should not wait for the third call before drawing conclusions. I have experienced the no-third-call stage on four separate occasions and am still here. I consider this a statistically uncomfortable sample size and have not sought to expand it.
