Along the Wisewood margin there patrols a thing I have come to call the grizzler — a badger left to walk one boundary for so many hundred years that walking it is all that remains of the animal. It does not roam; it holds a line, a hedge or a wall or the lip of a lane, widening the ditch murkneet after murkneet and pressing its scent into every stone. The nascenti leave it be, because every ditch it cuts feeds the organic network better than any surveyor could. It will let you cross its line once. The second time it takes the leg below the knee, the jaw does not open again, and it drags you down into a sett that goes further than any hole has business going — and nobody who goes down comes back up, because you were never prey, only something in the way of the border.

ripperwings are already circling before you notice them - that is the first thing to understand. Wingspan reads corvid until it drops fifty metres and you recalibrate. If it circles twice, leave the area: it is not circling because it is lost.

It stands at boundaries: the tree line where the murk thins, the wall where two territories meet, the place where the elder root begins and the path stops being yours. Its eyes are amber with a horizontal pupil, and they track you even when the head doesn't turn — not with hunger, not with threat assessment, but with recognition; it knows something about you specifically, and it is deciding whether that something matters. A warden in the oldest sense: it holds territory, and when you have taken something that was not yours to take, it will be at your heel until the debt is resolved. The Nascenti consider it a minor nuisance and have not committed resources to its study. This is a mistake.
View full editionfallclimbers are neither quite slipper nor quite nightmare, which makes them harder, not easier, to file away. Six or seven of them work the face of the upper Loxley weir at intervals — jointed limbs ending in hook-tips, plates shifting to the colour of whatever stone they happen to be ascending — and at the top they go over and are gone. Van's field note on the question of where they go afterwards reads: *Do not attempt to follow.*

Wingspan around two metres: against the murk your brain registers corvid, something manageable, right up until it drops fifty metres and you recalibrate. Field note: if it circles twice, leave the area. It is not circling because it is lost.
View full editionripperthroats hunt cooperatively in nuclear family packs and are territorial to the point where fights over territory are among the principal causes of ripperthroat mortality — a fact that suggests their threat model does not extend as far forward as it might. Certain remote sects of the Moors clan-line respect them, which is noted here as a data point rather than a recommendation. ripperthroats are also the ancestral species of the domestic barker, a detail Van has never commented on and Pip has never asked about.
View full editionripperthroats are the destination, not the threat — at least for the xin. Around age two hundred, a xin who wishes it may take the voluntary pilgrimage to the ripperthroat grounds; less than one percent choose this. The remaining 979 in a thousand die in duels, hunting, or war, which says something about what the alternative involves.
